Who is Godfred Yeboah Dame in Ghana?

Godred Yeboah Dame is an astute Ghanaian lawyer, politician, and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

At age 42, Godfred Yeboah Dame held — and still holds — the enviable record as the youngest Attorney General and Minister for Justice of the Republic of Ghana.

He is currently the 25th Attorney-General and Minister for Justice that Ghana has so far had.

As the Attorney General of Ghana, Mr Dame is the chief legal advisor to the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government, responsible for the Ministry of Justice, and a member of the General Legal Council (GCL) which regulates legal practice in Ghana.

From 1989 to 1996, Godfred Yeboah Dame attended Adisadel College in Cape Coast, where he obtained his GCE Ordinary Level and Advanced Level Certificates.

In 2001, he graduated from the University of Ghana with a Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB).

In 2003, he proceeded to the Ghana School of Law, where he obtained his professional certificate to practice as a qualified lawyer.

In October 2003, Godfred Yeboah Dame was called to the Ghana Bar.

He started practicing his law profession with the revered Ghanaian law firm of President Akufo-Addo and his colleague Mr Prempeh, Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co. — a law firm that specializes in various aspects of civil litigation.

In 2006, due to his immense contribution towards the defence of the media and human rights, rule of law, and civil liberties in general in Ghana, Mr Godfred Yeboah Dame was one of the few lawyers across Africa and the world at large to be awarded the Open Society Initiative Fellowship, and was also selected to pursue the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy (PCMLP) at the University of Oxford’s Centre for Socio-Legal Studies.

Godfred Yeboah Dame is married to Dr. Joycelyn Akosua Assimeng Dame who is a paediatric infectious disease specialist at the Department of Pediatrics, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra.

Dr. Joycelyn Akosua Assimeng Dame is the first paediatric infectious disease specialist to begin practicing in Ghana.

Career, Work Experience

From 2008 to 2009, Godfred Yeboah Dame was the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the Greater-Accra Regional Football Association.

In 2014, he was appointed a member of the Ghana Bar Association’s legal team.

At the Ghana Bar Association, Mr Godfred Yeboah Dame was a key member of some sensitive committees charged with the responsibility of policy formulation in the training of lawyers, notable among them being the Pupilage and Juniors Committee, which is concerned with the upholding of standards among junior practitioners of the law.

Between 2011 and 2016, Godfred Yeboah Dame was a member of the teaching faculty for Company Law and Practice at the Ghana School of Law.

From 2011 to 2017, he was a member of the Elections Committee of Ghana Football Association (GFA).

In January 2017, he was appointed as a teacher in Advocacy and Legal Ethics at the Ghana School of Law, a commitment he was unable to fulfill as a result of his appointment as Deputy Attorney-General and Deputy Minister for Justice in President Akufo-Addo’s first term as President.

Between 2009 and 2017, he was the Vice-Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association.

In March 2017, Godfred Yeboah Dame was appointed Deputy Attorney-General and Deputy Minister for Justice of Ghana by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

On January 21st, 2021, Godfred Dame was appointed as the substantive Attorney-General and Minister for Justice by President Akufo-Addo, taking over from his former boss, Hon. Gloria Akuffo.

Politics

Godfred Yeboah Dame has been a key member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In 2013, he, together with three of the Party’s former Attorneys-General, including Hon. Papa Owusu-Ankomah, Hon. Ayikoi Otoo, and Hon. Joe Ghartey, were tasked to review the 2013 Election Petition Verdict and come up with proposals to avoid a defeat of the Party in the 2016 elections which would result in another election petition, after having already served as one of the counsel for the Petitioners in the Election Petition.

In 2016, Mr Dame was a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Manifesto Committee on Governance that was responsible for the drafting of the Party’s proposed policies for the Legal and Governance Sector.

On January 21, 2021, he was appointed by President Akufo-Addo as the Attorney General and Minister for Justice.

On Friday, March 5th, 2021, Godfred Dame was sworn in as the substantive Attorney General and Minister of Justice by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, succeeding Hon Gloria Akuffo.

Achievements

Some of the top achievements of Godfred Dame ever since he was appointed to the office of the Attorney-General include;

  • Has been leading the efforts by the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government in recovering the illegal GH¢51.2million judgment debt paid businessman, Alfred Agbesi Woyome.
  • Saved Ghana from paying GH¢1.27 billion as judgement debt to NDK Financial Services
  • Ensured the termination of three mining leases given in favour of Exton Cubic Company Limited which is owned by business man Ibrahim Mahama, brother of former president John Dramani Mahama.
  • Ensured the challenge to the constitutionality of the appointment of Mr Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor did not see the light of day.
  • Stopped the challenge to the creation of new regions in Ghana,
  • Stopped the challenge to the compilation of a new register of voters by the National Democratic Congress for Election 2020.
  • He served on the Legal Service Board, the Ministerial Advisory Board of the Ministry of Justice, the Board of the University of Ghana Medical Centre and the Board of the Public Procurement Authority.
