Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia is a world-class Ghanaian economist, politician, lecturer, and banker of international repute.
He has, since 2017, been the Vice President to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the Republic of Ghana.
Dr Bawumia wowed many Ghanaians with his mind-blowing economic lectures prior to the 2016 Presidential & Parliamentary Elections.
In June, 2006, he was appointed by former President John Agyekum Kuffour as the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Mahamudu Bawumia was born to the late Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia and Hajia Mariama Bawumia in Tamale, Northern Ghana.
Dr Bawumia — who was born into an elite family — is the 12th child of his father’s 18 children, and the 2nd child of his mother’s 5 children.
His father, Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia — a teacher, lawyer, and politician — was a Mamprugu Royal and Paramount Chief of the Kperiga Traditional Area in Northern Ghana before his death in September, 2002.
Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia, together with of Chief S. D. Dombo, Chief Abeifa Karbo, Yakubu Tali, the Tolon Naa, and J. A. Braimah the Kabachewura, were the founding fathers of the Northern Peoples’ Party.
From 1992-2000, Dr. Bawumia’s father, Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia served as the Chairman of the Council of State under the NDC government during the 4th republic under President J. J. Rawlings.
His mother, Hajia Mariama Bawumia — a native of Kpasenkpe in the West Mamprusi District. She was a brilliant student, and was one of the first northern female students to gain admission to the prestigious Wesley Girls High School, Cape Coast.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s mother dies at age 81
The mother of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Hajia Mariama Bawumia sadly passed on in the early hours of Monday, September 13th, 2021.
She died at the age of 81.
As a staunch Muslim, she was buried the next day, Tuesday, September 14th, 2021, in Walewale in the Upper West Regon of Ghana.

Mahamudu Bawumia started his basic education at the Sakasaka Primary School in Tamale, Northern Ghana.
In 1975, he gained admission to Tamale Secondary School (TAMASCO) and was awarded the prize for ‘Best Overall Student in Form 3‘.
In 1981, he served as the President of the Ghana United Nations Students’ Association (GUNSA).
Mr Bawumia, after secondary school, travelled to the United Kingdom where he studied banking and obtained the Chartered Institute of Bankers Diploma (ACIB) with distinctions in Banking Law, Monetary Economics, Accounting and Banking within the rather short period of 18 months.
In 1987, Bawumia obtained a First Class Honours Degree in Economics from the Buckingham University.
He was subsequently admitted to the Oxford University, Lincoln College, and after a year of studies, obtained a Master’s Degree in Economics.
Mahamudu Bawumia did not stop there as he pursued his doctoral studies in Economics and obtained a Ph.D. in Economics from the prestigious Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1995,

Dr Bawumia is married to Samira Bawumia (Ramadan) — the only daughter of former PNC National Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan.
The two lovebirds met in May, 2003, but officially got married in February, 2004.
Dr Bawumia and Samira are currently blessed with four children.
Recently, there were some media reports that suggested he was also married to one Ramatu Bawumia, his supposed first wife.
However, Dr Bawumia in a press statement signed by his spokesperson Dr Gideon Boako, has denied the reports, saying he does not even know the said lady.
Bawumia Career, Work Experience
From 1988-1990, Dr Bawumia Mahamudu began working as a lecturer in Monetary Economics and International Finance at the Emile Woolf College of Accountancy in London, England.
He also worked as an economist at the Research Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington DC, United States of America (USA).
From 1996-2000, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia became an Assistant Professor of Economics at Hankamer School of Business, Baylor University in Waco, Texas, USA, where he was also awarded the ‘Young Researcher Award‘ in 1998.
And in 1999, he was also listed in “Who is Who Among America’s Teachers” as a result of his commitment to excellence in teaching.
In 2000, Dr. Bawumia took the next available flight back to Ghana, where he began working as an Economist at the Bank of Ghana.
He worked his way through the ranks from Senior Economist to Head of Department, and subsequently as Special Assistant to the Governor of the Bank.
In June, 2006, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was appointed as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana by former President John Agyekum Kuffour.
He resigned as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BOG) shortly after the 2008 Ghana Presidential & Parliamentary Elections.
From February to March 2009, Dr Bawumia worked as a Consultant to the Economic Commission of Africa.
From April to October 2009, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of British Columbia Liu Centre for Global Studies and UBC Fisheries Centre.
In October 2009, Mr Bawumia was appointed as a Fellow of the International Growth Centre (IGC), a research institute based jointly at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Oxford University that provides advice on economic growth to governments of developing countries, specifically serving as an IGC Team Member for Sierra Leone.
He also served as an Advisor to the Central Bank of Sierra Leone on the redesigning of the organizational structure of the Bank and its monetary policy framework.
In January 2010, he was appointed Resident Representative of the African Development Bank for Zimbabwe by the African Development Bank.
Dr Bawumia served in this position until he was reappointed as the Vice Presidential Candidate to Nana Akufo-Addo on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party for the 2012 Presidential Election.
Bawumia Politics, Political Life
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s political career kick-started after he was chosen by the then New Patriotic Party presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as his running mate to contest the 2008 Presidential Elections which was won by the late Professor Evans John Atta-Mills and his then vice president, John Dramani Mahama.
Mr Bawumia was again selected as the vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the 2012 Presidential Elections in Ghana.
Bawumia and Nana Akufo-Addo once again lost the 2012 Elections but this time to former president John Dramani Mahama and his vice, the late Kwesi Amissah-Arthur.
The NPP led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo petitioned the Supreme Court of Ghana, challenging the 2012 Presidential Election results that saw John Dramani Mahama emerge as the winner.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia became the lead witness for the petitioners in the 2012/2013 Presidential Election Petition.
In the 2016 Presidential Election, however, the NPP led by Nana Akufo-Addo with Dr Bawumia as his running mate emerged victorious, snatching five parliamentary seats from NDC in the Upper West Region for the first time, and the Party also increased its presidential votes significantly in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions.
In the 2020 Presidential Election, Nana Akufo-Adoo and Dr Bawumia were retained as the President and Vice President of the Republic of Ghana respectively.
