OB Amponsah Comic Career
OB’s career in comedy began whilst he was in University of Cape Coast (UCC), Central Region.
According to the Optometrist, he was always called upon by a female colleague to share jokes with his mates anytime they went on excursion for programmes.
“I really remember how this comedy thing started. Back in UCC, there was a lady called Margaret Boahemaa who would always call on me to share jokes on our excursion bound bus anytime we went out for programmes. I noticed my friends enjoyed it, but for me, it was just my way of administering my own medication to those who were downhearted,” he told Graphic Showbiz.
OB Amponsah had his day in comedy when he took part in a comedy show organized by Sammy Flex of AM Pluzz FM to unearth budding talents in comedy.
At the end of the competition, OB’s Twi football commentary joke was adjudged the best of the day.
“After enjoying that spotlight on AM Pluzz, Id James Brown also gave me the platform to feature on Comedy bar, a comedy show which is held monthly at the A&C Mall. I used the opportunity to groom my art for stand-up comedy,” he said to Graphic Showbiz.
OB also narrates that his father used to share a lot of jokes with his family when he was young.
“Sincerely, I think my interest in comedy started when I was just a small boy and my dad would share jokes with us.
“I also used to watch Keysoap Concert Party a lot and would imitate Nkomode, Okala and Agya Koo on stage way back in primary school at AKAB complex, in Berekum. However, I never knew those little things I did for fun as a child would bring me glory today,” he smiled, while uttering these words to Graphic Showbiz.
According to OB Amponsah, his best performance as a comedian was when he mounted the stage to do his thing at the “Lord of the Ribs” show organised by Nabil Alhassan of Event Factory in 2019.
His first show had the theme: “Won Sere a Gyai” which literally translates as “if you won’t laugh, nobody cares”.
OB Amponsah has performed with Africa’s greats like Basketmouth, Okey Bakassi, Bovi, and others.
In the lead up to the 2020 General Elections in Ghana, OB Amponsah had to apologize for a joke he did about former President John Dramani Mahama after receiving threats from some NDC party loyalists.
