Born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, Tory Lanez is a Grammy-nominated Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, composer, record producer, and fashion designer.

He is best known for his popular mixtape titled, “Lost Cause”, and his “I Told You” album which had popular songs like “Luv” and “Say It” peaking at the 19th and 23rd spots respectively on the ‘US Billboard Hot 100’ chart.

In 2015, through “Interscope Records”, Tory Lanez was signed to “Mad Love Records” owned by record producer, Benny Blanco.

Meaning of ‘Tory Lanez’

Whilst his family lived in Atlanta, Georgia, Daystar met a man by name Hakeem — a janitor or caretaker — who made the suggestion he use the name Tory Lanez because of his unusual behavior of running into roads and playing in the lanes without looking at the traffic.

Other sources also claim that he took the name “Tory” as the shortened form of “Notorious B.I.G.” (his favorite rapper), and “Lanez” comes from “lanes”, as his friend Hakeem nicknamed him.

Tory Lanez’s father, Sonstar Peterson is a celebrated author who’s book, “Destiny of the Black Race” was published in 1991.

After his birth, Tory’s Christian family lived in Montreal, Canada for a while before settling permanently in Miami, Florida, USA.

Tory Lanez was only 11 years old when his mother, Luella Peterson sadly lost her life to a rare disease that affects every four in every one million people.

His father, Sonstar Peterson, who became an ordained minister and a missionary, took him (Tory Lanez) to different places across the United States of America.

His family later settled in Georgia, and his father remarried a Kenyan lady he met online in 2011.

Tory’s father currently lives in Nairobi, Kenya with his second wife and their two kids.

In 2006, Tory Lanez was sent to live with his cousin Dahir Abib, Orane Forrest, in Jamaica, Queens, New York because of his behavior issues.

He was later sent back to Toronto, Canada to live with his grandmother who also evicted him at age 15.

Abandoned by his grandmother, Tory became homeless and started living on the streets with strangers and this experience he best describes as “it made me a man”.

Tory Lanez Music Career

Tory Lanez started rapping when he was just a kid and continued to rap throughout his childhood.

He idolizes the late Notorious BIG, and thus has adopted the nickname ‘Notorious’ in the new moniker “Tory Lanez”. He also cites Brandy and Ray J. as his musical inspirations growing up as a kid.

When his family finally settled in Florida, the rapper became fascinated with the thriving rap music scene there, and started rapping at outdoor music concerts at age 16.

In 2009, Tory recorded and released his debut mixtape, ‘T.L 2 T.O.’, using the YouTube platform as a huge stepping stone to launch his rap career.

He soon started directing his very own music videos and gained significant fame at the time

Florida-based superstar, Sean Kingston took interest in Tory Lanez talent when he heard him (Tory) rap and freestyle on the song, “Beamer, Benz, or Bentley” by Lloyd Banks.

Sean Kinston gave Tory the opportunity to perform live when they both met at a Justin Bieber concert and the fans loved his performance.

In 2010, Tory released four mixtapes, namely, “Just Landed”, “One Verse One Hearse”, “Playing for Keeps”,  and “Mr. 1 Verse Killah”.

Following the success of his mixtapes, Sean approached Tory and offered him a deal with his record label, ‘Time is Money Entertainment’ (TME)’.

On August 19th, 2016, Tori Lanez released his debut studio album, “I Told You” which debuted at the fourth spot on the ‘US Billboard Hot 200’ chart. The album also received positive reviews from critics and sold 52 thousand copies in the first week of its release.

One of the songs from the “I Told You” album titled “Luv” (produced by Cashmere Cat and Benny Blanco, and sampled from ‘Everyone Falls In Love’ by Jamaican dancehall duo, Tanto Metro and Devonte) reached the 19th spot on the ‘US Billboard Hot 100’ chart, while another song, ‘Say It,’ peaked at the 23rd spot on the same chart.

In March 2018, Tory released his second album, “Memories Don’t Die” which had featured guest appearances from established rappers such as Wiz Khalifa and 50 Cent. The album debuted at the third spot on the ‘US Billboard 200’ chart and received mixed reviews from critics. The album was criticized mostly due to its lack of originality.

Controversies & Feuds: Tory Lanez feud with Drake, Megan Thee Stallion, Eric Bellinger, Joyner Lucas, DreamDoll

Tory Lanez has been involved in some controversies with some popular artistes including Canadian rapper Drake, Jacquees, Joyner Lucas, Don Q, DreamDoll, among others.

He described his sexual encounter with DreamDoll, the famous American rapper, whose real name is Tabatha Robinson, in one of his tracks.

Tory later explained in an interview, that it was he, who inspired Tabatha to quit her work in a strip club and start rapping.

On March 26th, 2018, Tory got himself involved in a scuffle with the security personnel at a concert in Midland, Texas.

Miffed by this, he asked his fans to “fuck sh*t up” which then caused a riot on the spot leading to the arrest of many concertgoers. This led to the organizers almost filing a lawsuit against Tory.

During an interview, Tory also made the claim that he had ghost-written songs for other artistes such as Akon, TI, and Travis Scott.

Tory Lanez charged with shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the feet

On July 12, 2020, a shooting incident in the Hollywood Hills left rapper Megan Thee Stallion with gunshots wounds in her feet.

Both Tory Lanez and Megan had earlier been partying together with beauty mogul and reality TV star, Kylie Jenner in a house party that night on July 12, 2020.

Megan Thee Stallion later publicly claimed that it was Tory Lanez who shot her in the feet.

Tory Lanez has since denied the claims with the release of his “Daystar”album.

In one of the tracks on the “Daystar” album, “Money Over Fallouts”, Tory rapped:

“Girl, you had the nerve to write that statement on an affidavit? Knowing I ain’t do it but I’m coming at my truest? Trying to keep this sh*t 200 with you, shorty, I can prove it.”

On Thursday, October 8th, 2020, Tory was officially charged with felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, personal use of a firearm, and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle

Lanez was arrested shortly after the shooting incident on July 12 for carrying a concealed weapon. He was released on $35,000 bail.

If convicted, Tory Lanez faces a possible maximum sentence of 22 years and 8 months in state prison.

Tory Lanez feud with Drake

In 2010, when Tori was 17 years, he sent his ‘Play For Keeps’ mixtape to Drake and challenged him (Drake aka Drizzy) that if he wasn’t impressed, he (Tory) would pay him $10,000.

Drake did not respond until 2016, when he took a dig at Tory in his “Summer Sixteen” by rapping, “All you boys in the new Toronto want to be me a little.”

Tory also responded by saying, “calling Toronto ‘The Six’ wasn’t cool”. Their feud continued in a few more songs from each side.

Tory Lanez has gone ahead to remix Drake’s “Controlla” which blew up with over 8.3million plays on Soundcloud. His remix is one of his most famous tracks to date.

Tory Lanez feud with Joyner Lucas

In November 2018, Joyner Lucas challenged Tory Lanez to begin a rap battle after the latter (Tory) had claimed in an Instagram Live video that he is a better rapper than the former (Joyner Lucas).

The two top rappers went on to release several diss songs including the “Lucky You Freestyle” and the “Zeze Freestyle” which were targeted at each other, 

Tory Lanez feud with  Eric Bellinger

The feud between Tory Lanez and Eric Bellinger started with the release of Tory’s song, “Hate To Say”. In the song, the Canadian rapper said: “R&B nigg*s with Sisqó haircuts, wildin’ and stylin’/They dissin’, guess they just tryna go viral”.

Eric Bellinger also hit back with his own diss song titled, “Yikes”.
