Who is Sista Afia in Ghana?

Born Francisca Gawugah Duncan-Williams, Sista Afia is a Ghanaian Highlife & Afro pop singer, rapper, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur.

The songstress is the niece of the popular Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams who is the presiding Archbishop and General Overseer of Christian Action Faith Ministries (CAFM) in Ghana.

Sista Afia aka ‘Queen Solomon’ is best known for the hit songs: “Slay Queen”, “Jeje” featuring Shatta Wale, “Are You Ready”, among others.

Date of Birth

Francisca Gawugah aka Sista Afia, known locally as Afia Serwaa Yeboah, was born on Friday, November 8th, 1991.

Age

The “Slay Queen” hitmaker is currently 30 years and will be 31 yearrs come November this year, 2023.

Parents

Francisca Gawuga was born to Ms Perpetual Duncan-Williams and Mr Gawugah Eshun in Kumasi, Ghana.

Hometown

Sista Afia is a typical Fante girl who comes from Swedru in the Central Regon of Ghana but was originally born and raised in Santasi, Fankyenebra — a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

Early Life

Growing up as a little kid, Francisca spent her early childhood in Kumasi and Accra before relocating to the United Kingdom (UK) at age 15 to further her education.

She returned to Ghana in 2015 to pursue her music career and has since moved on to release hit singles such “Jeje” featuring Shatta Wale, “Slay Queen”, among others.

Upon her return, she opened a Restaurant and a Shisha Lounge in Accra.

SHS & University Education

Francisca Gawugah aka Sista Afia first went to Reverend John Teye Memorial Institute in Accra for a while.

According to the songstress, because her mom (Ms Perpetual Duncan-Williams or @perpetual_pepe1 on Instagram) was travelling outside Ghana at the time and there was nobody to take care of her, she was sent back to Kumasi to continue her education at Angel Educational Complex (located at Kronum Abuohia) before relocating to the United Kindom (UK) at age 15 to pursue higher education in nursing.

Sista Afia proceeded to Nottingham University in the UK where she had her Masters (MSc) Degree in Nursing.

Sista Afia is now a qualified UK nurse but has chosen to pursue music as her career.

Husband, Boyfriend

It seems Sista Afia hasn’t been that lucky when it comes to dating and relationships compared with her other female colleagues in the industry,

The “Jeje” singer was in a relationship for about 5 to 6 years with a UK-based Ghanaian guy who broke her heart.

According to Sista Afa, she left the relationship because her boyfriend — who she started dating at the age of 16 years in London — was a womanizer and very abusive, too.

When a post was put up by Zionfelix on his Instagram page requesting his followers to leave a message about their former boyfriends or girlfriends in celebration of “National Ex Day”, what Sista Afia said was harshly harsh.

“Foolish man,” the ‘Are You Ready’ singer brutally stated.

Music Career

Ghanaian Highlife act, Bisa Kdei discovered Sista Afia in London (UK) after she was introduced to him (Bisa Kdei) by her former manager (also in London).

After becoming a professionally trained nurse in the UK, the “Jeje” singer returned to Ghana in 2015 to begin her music career.

“I was a nurse but now I think I’ve paused on the nursing. I’m working on my own restaurant and shisha lounge small small. It is in Ghana.

“Nursing wasn’t something that I was happy doing. Like it was something, even though it’s nice to help people, that’s not where my field was. I just felt I had to do what I love best and that is music. I still can help anybody so far as I got my degree and certificates. I can still open my hospital in Ghana and help kids,” ,” the songstress said in an interview with Pulse Ghana.

Sista Afia right from the beginning of her career as a highlife musician was inspired and groomed by Highlife act, Bisa Kdei.

She got signed to BK Records & Ace Kandi Records.

One of her earlier releases was the perfect collaboration she had with Bisa Kdei on “Kro kro no” — which was written and composed by Bisa Kdei.

Sista Afia first gained attention in Ghana with the release of her hit single, “Jeje” which featured African Dancehall King, Shatta Wale.

Controversies: Sista Afia’s ‘beef’ (feud) with Eno Barony & Freda Rhymz

On April 22nd, 2020, Sista Afia first released a new rap song titled “WMT (Wo Maame Tw3)” which was said to be a diss song to the likes of Sister Derby (Deborah), Wendy Shay, or anybody the song was indirectly referred to.

Freda Rhymz reacted to Sista Afia’s WMT by releasing a track titled “KMT (Komot)” on April 27th, 2020, which also served as a diss song to Eno Barony.

Eno Barony also responded with some ‘punches’ to both Sista Afia and Freda Rhymz with the release of her rap song titled, “Rap Goddess” on May 1st, 2020.

Sista Afia came back strongly with the release of “You Got Nerves” on May 5, 2020 that really touched the nerves of Eno Barony and Freda Rhymz.

Then came the bombshell, “Argument Done” by Eno Barony which was released on May 8th, 2020.

Eno Barony’s “Argument Done” which was pregnant with heavy punchlines delivered to Medikal — who was alleged to have ghost-written Sista Afia’s “You Got Nerves” lyrics — truly lived up to its billing by finally getting the argument done.

Freda Rhymz also dropped “Point Of Correction” on May 11th, 2020 to ‘address’ Sista Afia’s “You Got Nerves” and Eno Barony’s “Argument Done”.

What followed the release of “Point Of Correction” was a physical banter that ensued between Freda Rhymz and Sista Afia on the premises of TV3 Network.

The feud between Sista Afia and Freda Rhymz was finally settled by Nana Ama McBrown on the United Showbiz program aired on UTV.
